DECEMBER 5, 1984

The following excerpt is from Maine State Police Detectives Shuman and Pinkham's interview of Richard Sargent at the Hancock County Jail the day (12/5/84) he was indicted and arrested for Mike's murder. Shuman refers to Robert Elrick's statement when he tells Richard that "people in the Penobscot County Jail knew that there was going to be a body in the camp." He also refers to the Maine DEA drug sting that resulted in Mike's death when he says, "it was your brother that got busted. And he thought he got set up by Cochran." Pinkham told me in March of 1981 that Percy Sargent sent a call to have Mike "taken care of" and that Lionel Cormier set the fire. When I saw Pinkham a couple of weeks later he said he didn't tell me that, but HE DID! Neither Shuman nor Pinkham ever interviewed Percy Sargent or Lionel Cormier. Barry Shuman will be identified as BS and Richard Sargent as RS:

BS: Did you know Micheal Cochran?

RS: No, I never met him. ...

BS: I know [Percy] was in jail at Penobscot County. He also made a phone call that night.

RS: Who’d he call?

BS: We think it was you he called, told you that he got busted and that Cochran turned him in....And he wanted you to take care of Cochran.

RS: No, he’d ask me to do that, never. ...I didn’t set no fire.

BS: I didn’t say you set a fire.

RS: I didn’t kill anybody.

BS: The fire killed him. [Percy Sargent told Mike's brother, Derry that Mike was shot and that the fire was to cover-up what was done to Mike.]

RS: Well, I didn’t set no fire. ...I’ll take a lie detector test.”

BS: Well, that’s going to be down the road, depending on what happens here in the next few days, the next few weeks. But you were in town. And you were with the two guys that are locked up in there right now. They set the fire.

RS: They might have, but I didn’t. I don’t even know, all I know is their names, you know. That’s all I know.

BS: It’s funny the people in the Penobscot County Jail knew that there was going to be a body in the camp, cause Ralph talked to a guy that was in the county jail.

RS: Percy could have been at that camp when it went up, but he got busted that night. If he wouldn’t have got busted, he would have been in that camp.

BS: Then it wouldn’t have gone up. Cause the camp wasn’t burnt up [to] teach Dupray a lesson. ...Cochran was going to be taught a lesson.

RS: ...I didn’t deal with these people. If I take a lie detector test would you believe me? I will take one, if you want me to, so you’ll see I’m telling the truth.

BS: Cochran was going to be taught a lesson. Cochran was going to snitch. _______your brother and blood’s a little thicker than water.

RS: I don't know about that. Take that lie detector test and you'll see that I'm telling the truth. You can sit there and look at me, but I did not have nothing to do with it.

BS: What are you going to do if you don't pass the lie detector test?

RS: I know I'm going to pass it. I didn't do it.

BS: I think things got out of hand that night.

RS: What night?

BS: The night that Cochran was killed.

RS: I wasn’t there. Wasn’t even in that neck of the woods.

BS: Yeah, but it was your brother that got busted. And he thought he got set up by Cochran.

RS: I don't know. I'm telling you everything I know. I didn't have nothing to do with that.
